The pitfall of experimenting on the web: How unattended selective attrition leads to surprising (yet false) research conclusions.

چکیده
The authors find that experimental studies using online samples (e.g., MTurk) often violate the assumption of random assignment, because participant attrition-quitting a study before completing it and getting paid-is not only prevalent, but also varies systemically across experimental conditions. Using standard social psychology paradigms (e.g., ego-depletion, construal level), they observed attrition rates ranging from 30% to 50% (Study 1). The authors show that failing to attend to attrition rates in online panels has grave consequences. By introducing experimental confounds, unattended attrition misled them to draw mind-boggling yet false conclusions: that recalling a few happy events is considerably more effortful than recalling many happy events, and that imagining applying eyeliner leads to weight loss (Study 2). In addition, attrition rate misled them to draw a logical yet false conclusion: that explaining one's view on gun rights decreases progun sentiment (Study 3). The authors offer a partial remedy (Study 4) and call for minimizing and reporting experimental attrition in studies conducted on the Web. (PsycINFO Database Record

Generalized lymph node activation after Influenza vaccination on 18F FDG-PET/CT imaging, an important pitfall in PET interpretation
We report on a 59-year-old female patient with an infected vascular graft investigated with 18F FDG-PET/CT. The first of two studies showed FDG activity in the left deltoid and ipsilateral axillary lymph nodes explained by influenza vaccination the day prior. The second 18F FDG-PET/CT showed multiple FDG-avid lymph nodes on both sides of the diaphragm without tracer accumulation at the vaccinat...

Background and objective: There has been a considerable interest shown recently in student nurse attrition. Despite a long history of research on this problem, attrition rates remain a cause for concern. Materials and methods: This article describes a cross-sectional study to identify the Zanjan nursing students’ opinion toward “nursing “attrition” and “ the main reasons for attrition” in...

In modern decentralised health systems, district and local managers are increasingly responsible for financing, managing, and delivering healthcare. However, their lack of adequate skills and competencies are a critical barrier to improved performance of health systems. Given the financial and human resource, constraints of relying on traditional face-to-face training to upskill a large and dis...

Due to increasing in cyber-attacks, the need for web servers attack detection technique has drawn attentions today. Unfortunately, many available security solutions are inefficient in identifying web-based attacks. The main aim of this study is to detect abnormal web navigations based on web usage profiles. In this paper, comparing scrolling behavior of a normal user with an attacker, and simu...
متن کاملBias in the study of prediction of change: a Monte Carlo simulation study of the effects of selective attrition and inappropriate modeling of regression toward the mean
BACKGROUND Medical researchers often use longitudinal observational studies to examine how risk factors predict change in health over time. Selective attrition and inappropriate modeling of regression toward the mean (RTM) are two potential sources of bias in such studies. METHOD The current study used Monte Carlo simulations to examine bias related to selective attrition and inappropriate mo...
